Joe Saunders Earns Club Record Five Wins in April.

Joe Saunders’s slot before this season began was as the fifth starter on the Los Angeles Angels pitching staff. Saunders (26) has quickly risen to the team ace, after picking up win number 5 without a loss. Joe tossed eight shutout innings against division rival Oakland on April 29 in Anaheim. Manager, Mike Scioscia has sent him to the mound six times this season and Saunders has lived up to all expectations, earning five wins. His Earned Runs Average is just 2.08, third in the league, while he has pitched 43 innings. His five wins in April ties the club record, which was established 30 years ago by Frank Tanana.

The 6’3” southpaw from Falls Church, VA took the Anaheim mound filled with emotion and wearing a Virginia Tech Cap to honor his alma mater, shortly after a tragic campus incident left 33 dead on the Virginia Tech campus last April. Joe placed an order for an SSK pitching glove with a burgundy “VT” logo embroidered on the pinky area for inspiration. He uses a 12-1/2” Black Glove with a Grid Web and an Open Back style. Saunders is known as a good fielder and has never committed an error using an SSK ball glove in his young big league career, a career that began in 2005.

SSK is very pleased that Joe Saunders has gotten off to such a great start this season. This could be the year when he is selected to the American League All-Star team for the first time. The 2008 Summer Classic will be staged at Yankee Stadium in New York. We also wish him well in seeking to help bring a World Series Champion Trophy to the city of Anaheim for the first time in six years. The 2008 season should be a big breakout year for big Joe.
